Coloring Outside The Lines

Friends – I created this banner for the City of Dallas in 1996 for their Deep Ellum Arts District. It was such a joy to make and challenged me to grow as an artist. This piece reminds me to embrace creative endeavors that force us to work outside our comfort zone and to color “outside the lines”. I was limited on color selections, size, work environment, and theme. The banner was 12 feet long and took up our entire yard as I had to paint it outside. The city provided sticky sign ink to paint the piece and I had to plead for pink as they only had given me primary colors. They also requested the theme of a couple eating at a cafe which was the only thing that was easy about completing this art piece. It was a great feeling of accomplishment when I finished it and it was also an honor to have it displayed for many years on the streets of Dallas. I hope it inspires you to try something new and be open to stretching yourself as you create this week. I would love to hear about a time in which you worked outside the parameters of what was comfortable. Hugs to you! Deana (Dee-na)
